BAGUIO CITY — Leptospirosis cases in the Philippines' premier mountain resort destination have declined significantly in 2024, offering a measure of relief to public health officials even as the disease claimed one confirmed victim. The City Health Services Office reported the 39 percent reduction in cases through late August compared with figures from the identical timeframe in the previous year.
The confirmed death marks a sobering reminder of leptospirosis's potential severity, particularly during seasons when flooding and poor sanitation create conditions favorable for the bacteria's spread. The disease, transmitted through contact with contaminated water and rodent urine, remains a public health concern in the mountainous region.
The improvement in case numbers may reflect sustained awareness campaigns and preventive measures implemented by city health authorities. Officials have previously emphasized the importance of avoiding contact with flood waters, maintaining proper sanitation, and seeking immediate medical attention for symptoms including high fever, muscle pain, and kidney problems.
The Baguio City Public Information Office released the health data in late August, highlighting progress in disease control efforts while cautioning residents to maintain vigilance during the rainy season.
