Bahrain relaxes work permit rules, allows temporary job switches

Bahrain's labour ministry has amended its work permit framework to allow expatriate workers increased mobility in the employment market. Under the new rules, foreign employees can now secure temporary positions with other companies for a three-month period, subject to authorization from both the Labour Market Regulatory Authority (LMRA) and their primary employer.

The regulatory change represents a departure from Bahrain's traditionally restrictive sponsorship system, which has historically tied workers to a single employer throughout their contract period. Industry analysts suggest the modification aims to address labour shortages in specific sectors while offering workers greater career flexibility and supplementary income opportunities.

The amendment is expected to benefit the substantial Indian expatriate workforce in Bahrain, which comprises a significant portion of the kingdom's migrant labour population. Indian professionals in sectors ranging from healthcare to engineering and finance may now explore short-term assignments with other organizations without forfeiting their primary employment status.

However, the regulatory relaxation does not extend to domestic workers, who remain subject to existing sponsorship restrictions. Officials have indicated that the three-month temporary work window requires formal approval documentation from both the LMRA and the sponsoring employer before commencement of the secondary assignment.
