MANILA – The bail hearing for former House Speaker Martin Romualdez in connection with his plunder case commenced Monday before the Sandiganbayan Third Division, with the accused participating through video conference from his detention facility.

Romualdez, held at the New Quezon City Jail of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in Barangay Payatas, also executed the pretrial order electronically during the proceedings.

The plunder charge marks a significant legal proceeding for Romualdez, one of the country's most prominent political figures. The bail hearing will determine whether he can be released pending trial while the case proceeds through the anti-graft court.

The Sandiganbayan Third Division's decision on bail is expected to follow after the hearing concludes. The plunder case remains one of several high-profile matters under scrutiny in the Philippine justice system.
