Police in Thailand have taken into custody the head of a Bangkok company that operated an online platform modeled after China's Taobao marketplace, according to law enforcement officials. The suspect is accused of providing unlicensed foreign currency exchange and payment processing services, allowing Thai consumers to convert baht into Chinese yuan for purchases from mainland retailers.
The Taobao Thailand website served as an intermediary platform connecting Thai buyers with Chinese merchants and goods. Investigators determined that the company was conducting currency conversion and facilitating cross-border transactions without proper authorization from Thailand's financial regulatory authorities.
Operating unlicensed money exchange services violates Thai financial regulations, which require companies handling foreign currency transactions to obtain appropriate licenses and maintain compliance with anti-money laundering protocols. The case reflects growing scrutiny of informal financial intermediaries that have emerged alongside the surge in cross-border e-commerce between Thailand and China.
Police did not disclose additional details regarding the scope of transactions processed through the platform or the total number of affected customers. The investigation is ongoing as authorities examine the company's financial records and operational structure.
