Bangladesh cabinet to review Tk455 billion metro rail project Wednesday

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) will deliberate on the Gabtoli-Dasherkandi metro rail initiative during its weekly session on Wednesday, according to government sources. The proposed transit line carries a total estimated cost of Tk455.03 billion, making it a significant infrastructure undertaking for the capital.
The metro project is designed to provide rapid transit connectivity between two congested commercial and residential areas of Dhaka, potentially reducing travel times and alleviating pressure on existing road networks. The corridor serves areas experiencing substantial population growth and commercial activity.
If approved by ECNEC, the project would advance Bangladesh's broader push to modernize urban transportation infrastructure. The government has prioritized mass rapid transit systems as part of its strategy to manage congestion in Dhaka and improve mobility for millions of commuters.
ECNEC, chaired by the Planning Minister, reviews and approves major development projects on behalf of the National Economic Council. Wednesday's session will determine whether the Gabtoli-Dasherkandi alignment proceeds to implementation or requires further revision.
