Tensions remained high in Bangladesh's garment manufacturing heartland on Tuesday as workers continued mass demonstrations despite establishment of a new wage board, with security forces moving to disperse crowds in the Ashulia industrial zone north of Dhaka.
The clashes erupted after groups of textile workers blockaded major roads and hurled bricks at police personnel. Authorities responded with tear gas canisters and sound grenades to clear the blocked thoroughfares and restore traffic flow, according to witnesses at the scene.
The unrest reflects simmering discontent within the nation's crucial garment sector, which employs millions and generates substantial export revenues. Workers have been pressing for improved wages and working conditions, with demonstrations persisting despite government moves to address grievances through the establishment of a wage determination board.
Bangladesh's readymade garment industry, a cornerstone of the economy, has faced repeated labour disputes in recent years. The latest protests suggest that official wage-setting mechanisms may be insufficient to quell worker grievances without broader structural reforms in the sector.
