Bangladesh's Home Minister has decided to skip the Bimstec ministerial meeting on security matters planned for Delhi, according to official sources. The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation brings together seven South and Southeast Asian nations to address shared regional challenges.
The absence represents a significant gap in the Bangladesh delegation to one of the region's key multilateral forums. Bimstec comprises Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand, collectively working on issues ranging from security cooperation to trade and environmental protection.
While the reasons for the Home Minister's non-attendance were not immediately detailed, such high-level absences from regional meetings often reflect scheduling constraints or shifting diplomatic priorities. The meeting is expected to cover critical security issues affecting member states in the Indian Ocean region.
Other Bangladeshi officials are expected to represent the country's interests at the Delhi gathering. The Bimstec platform has increasingly gained prominence as member states seek to strengthen cooperation on transnational challenges including counter-terrorism, maritime security, and disaster management.
