Bangladesh PM backs Dutch involvement in Teesta River project study

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has expressed her government's appreciation for the Dutch interest in undertaking a feasibility study related to the Teesta River project, signalling Bangladesh's openness to international expertise in developing this strategically important water resource.

The Teesta, one of South Asia's major transboundary rivers, has long been central to regional water-sharing discussions. Bangladesh has consistently sought to maximise its share of the river's waters for irrigation, hydroelectric power generation, and agricultural development, particularly in northern regions where water scarcity remains a pressing concern.

The involvement of Netherlands technical expertise could provide valuable insights into optimal project design and implementation strategies. Dutch engineering and water management capabilities have been sought in various infrastructure projects across South and Southeast Asia, reflecting the country's reputation in hydro-engineering and resource management.

The feasibility study represents a potential step forward in advancing the Teesta project, though significant negotiations would remain necessary given the river's transboundary nature and the interests of neighbouring India. Bangladesh has previously raised concerns over upstream water diversion, and any comprehensive project framework would require coordination between all riparian states.

The government's welcome of Dutch participation underscores Bangladesh's commitment to exploring technical solutions and international cooperation in developing its water resources for national economic benefit.
