Bangladesh PM calls for swift Rohingya repatriation to Myanmar
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has told the United Nations that the root cause of the Rohingya crisis lies in Myanmar, and therefore the solution must also be found there. She has called for the prompt and safe return of displaced Rohingya people to their homeland.

Addressing the United Nations, Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina underscored her government's position that Myanmar bears primary responsibility for resolving the protracted Rohingya humanitarian crisis. She emphasized that any sustainable solution must address the underlying issues that have driven the stateless minority from their homeland.
Hashina stated that Bangladesh views the immediate and secure repatriation of displaced Rohingya populations to Myanmar as the only viable path forward. The statement reflects Dhaka's long-standing stance that hosting over a million Rohingya refugees in camps in Cox's Bazar represents an unsustainable burden for the resource-constrained nation.
Bangladesh has consistently advocated for international pressure on Myanmar to create conditions conducive to the safe return of Rohingya refugees. The country has called for guarantees regarding citizenship rights, freedom of movement, and security safeguards for returnees—conditions it says Myanmar must fulfill before repatriation can proceed at scale.
The Rohingya crisis intensified following the military crackdown in Myanmar's Rakhine State in 2017, which prompted a massive exodus of refugees to Bangladesh. Despite the passage of several years, the return process has remained largely stalled, with Rohingya citing security concerns and the absence of legal status in Myanmar as major obstacles to repatriation.
