Bangladesh police eye AI cameras to combat yaba drug trafficking

Bangladesh Police are considering the implementation of AI-equipped cameras as part of an expanded strategy to tackle the escalating yaba crisis gripping the nation. The drug, an amphetamine tablet often laced with methamphetamine, has become one of the most pressing narcotics challenges facing law enforcement officials.

The proposed surveillance system would utilise advanced computer vision and machine learning algorithms to identify suspicious activities, unusual movement patterns, and potential drug-related transactions in real-time. According to police officials, the cameras could be strategically positioned at border checkpoints, airports, seaports, and major transportation hubs where drug smuggling typically occurs.

The technology functions by analysing video feeds to detect behavioural anomalies and flagging instances that warrant human investigation. Authorities argue the system could reduce response times and increase the efficiency of drug interdiction operations by automating initial surveillance and alert mechanisms.

While proponents contend the AI cameras represent a modernisation of enforcement capabilities, questions remain regarding implementation costs, data privacy protections, and the accuracy of the algorithms in distinguishing genuine threats from ordinary public activity. Yaba seizures have increased significantly in recent years, with law enforcement recording record busts annually as the drug continues to flood Bangladesh from neighbouring countries.
