Bangladesh's graduation from least developed country status delayed to 2029

Bangladesh's transition from least developed country classification has been pushed back by three years to November 2029, extending the period during which the South Asian nation remains eligible for special trade concessions and development assistance available to LDCs.

The delay reflects the complexities involved in achieving the economic thresholds required for graduation from LDC status. Bangladesh had previously been on track for an earlier transition, but revised timelines now reflect more realistic assessments of the country's development trajectory.

The postponement maintains Bangladesh's access to preferential trading arrangements and concessional financing terms that accompany LDC status. These benefits have historically supported the nation's export-oriented industries, particularly the ready-made garment sector, which benefits from duty-free access to major markets.

As one of South Asia's largest economies, Bangladesh has made significant progress in recent decades, though challenges remain in infrastructure development, poverty reduction, and institutional strengthening. The extended LDC classification period offers additional runway for policymakers to implement reforms aimed at achieving sustained development gains before the 2029 graduation deadline.
