Bangladesh has agreed to a $335.78 million concessional loan from China to support comprehensive modernisation of Mongla Port, located in Bagerhat district in southwestern Bangladesh. The financing arrangement marks a significant step in upgrading the country's maritime infrastructure and expanding its port capabilities to handle growing regional trade demands.
Mongla Port, one of Bangladesh's two seaports alongside Chittagong Port, has been earmarked for substantial development as part of the government's broader strategy to enhance maritime connectivity and logistics efficiency. The modernisation project is expected to increase cargo handling capacity, improve vessel operations, and strengthen the port's role in facilitating international commerce.
The loan is provided on concessional terms, reflecting the deepening economic ties between Bangladesh and China. Port modernisation projects typically include upgrades to berths, dredging operations, container handling equipment, and other infrastructure necessary to meet contemporary shipping standards and accommodate larger vessels.
The investment aligns with Bangladesh's objectives to diversify its port infrastructure and reduce operational bottlenecks that have traditionally limited throughput at existing facilities. Enhanced port capacity is seen as crucial for supporting the country's export-oriented industries and attracting foreign direct investment in manufacturing and logistics sectors.
