Bangladesh Seeks Removal of Indian Trade Barriers on Key Exports

Bangladesh has formally requested India to lift restrictions on exports through land ports and remove anti-dumping duties on jute products and PET film. The move comes as Dhaka seeks to expand bilateral trade and ease market access for its key commodities.

Bangladesh has pressed India to dismantle trade restrictions that it says are hampering bilateral commerce, particularly focusing on land port operations and tariff barriers on sensitive product categories. The requests include streamlining export procedures through Indian land borders and withdrawing anti-dumping duties levied on Bangladeshi jute products and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film, both significant export items for the country.

The issue highlights ongoing trade friction between the two South Asian neighbours despite their historical ties and shared regional interests. Bangladesh contends that existing restrictions create unnecessary bottlenecks for legitimate exports and increase transaction costs for traders operating across the border.

Official sources indicate that Bangladesh has also sought continuity in preferential trade arrangements with India, underscoring the importance of sustained market access for Bangladeshi goods. The jute sector, in particular, remains a traditional export stronghold that Bangladesh views as vulnerable to protectionist measures.

India-Bangladesh bilateral trade remains modest relative to their geographic proximity and economic complementarities. Resolving trade irritants is viewed as essential for deepening economic integration in the region and supporting the economic aspirations of both nations.
