Bangladesh signals openness to Saudi-Pakistan-Turkey defence pact

Bangladesh is open to exploring membership in the defence alliance established by Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey, according to senior government officials. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kobir said Dhaka maintains a positive stance towards the possibility of joining economic or defence frameworks involving the three nations.

The alliance, formally signed in Mecca on August 7, creates a collective security arrangement whereby an armed attack on any member state is considered an attack on all signatories. The pact establishes a framework for coordinated deterrence and defence cooperation among the parties.

Kobir emphasised that Bangladesh would base any decision on participation on national interests and broader geopolitical considerations. Speaking to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha, the state news agency, he noted that the government follows a "Bangladesh First" policy underpinned by careful assessment of global economic and trade dynamics.

The official stressed that Dhaka's foreign policy remains balanced and principled, with national welfare as its primary objective. This approach will guide deliberations on potential membership in multilateral defence or economic arrangements, Kobir indicated.
