COTABATO CITY — The first directly elected Bangsamoro Parliament held its opening session Friday at the Bangsamoro Government Center, with nearly complete attendance underscoring the significance of the historic occasion.
Sheikh Muslim Guiamaden, the Bangsamoro wali or ceremonial head, formally inaugurated proceedings by striking a gong in the regional legislature's plenary hall—a symbolic gesture marking the commencement of the session. The gong strike followed protocol for official parliamentary openings in the autonomous region.
Of the parliament's 80 members, 79 were present for the convening, reflecting strong participation in what represents a major step in the Bangsamoro governance framework. The high attendance demonstrated commitment from elected representatives to the newly constituted legislative body.
The parliament's establishment follows the ratification of the Bangsamoro Organic Law and represents a transition toward expanded autonomous governance in the region. The directly elected parliament replaces the interim transitional authority that previously oversaw Bangsamoro affairs.
