Police in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region intercepted a significant smuggling operation on Tuesday, August 18, during routine enforcement operations. Officers acting under provisions of the regional election gun ban discovered and seized the contraband cigarettes during inspections in Cotabato City and neighboring Maguindanao del Norte.
The five individuals arrested in connection with the smuggling operation were taken into custody as investigators work to determine the full scope of the trafficking network. Brig. Gen. Christopher Abecia, regional director of the Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region, confirmed the seizure and noted that the operation disrupted a significant illicit trade in the region.
The confiscation highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat contraband smuggling in the Bangsamoro region. Authorities have intensified patrols and checkpoints as part of broader security measures, with the August 18 operation representing one of the larger seizures recorded in recent weeks.
Investigators are continuing to process evidence and gather intelligence on the suspected smuggling network. The case has been forwarded to appropriate authorities for further investigation and prosecution of those charged.
