PAGADIAN CITY—The Bangsamoro Human Rights Commission (BHRC) Basilan Provincial Office has launched a formal investigation into two separate ambushes that occurred in the province within a four-day window, issuing a strong statement of condemnation on Friday.
The attacks resulted in significant casualties, with one soldier killed and 24 others wounded in the incidents. Among the injured were a 10-year-old child and his father, underscoring the civilian toll of the violence.
The BHRC, which operates under the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), announced the investigation as part of its mandate to monitor and investigate alleged human rights violations in the region. The timing of the two incidents within such a brief span has raised concerns about security conditions in Basilan.
The investigation comes as the autonomous region continues efforts to address security challenges and protect civilians in conflict-affected areas. The BHRC's action reflects ongoing concerns about violence impacting both military personnel and non-combatants across the province.
