MANILA — The closure of two bank accounts linked to a company with ties to Atty. Manases Carpio, husband of Vice President Sara Duterte, has emerged as a focal point in her ongoing impeachment trial. The accounts were shuttered in July 2026, the same month her trial commenced in the Senate Impeachment Court.
The disclosure came during questioning by Senator-judge Francis "Kiko" Pangilinan of a prosecution witness from Security Bank during Wednesday's proceedings. The banana chips company in which Carpio holds a stake had maintained the accounts at the financial institution.
The timing of the account closures—concurrent with the start of the impeachment trial—raised questions during the court proceedings. Prosecutors presented the development as part of their case, though additional details regarding the circumstances and reasons for the closures were not immediately clarified.
The impeachment trial of Vice President Duterte continues to examine various allegations and related financial matters. The Senate Impeachment Court has been hearing evidence and witness testimony as the proceedings advance.
