Bank employees observed a nationwide strike on Wednesday as unions intensified pressure on management and government over pending workplace demands. The Unified Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), an umbrella body representing multiple banking sector unions, mobilized workers across public and private sector banks to demonstrate against unresolved issues affecting staff.
Among the key demands are the introduction of a five-day working week for bank employees and the withdrawal of the Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, which unions argue disadvantages workers and creates inconsistent compensation structures. The UFBU has also pressed for improvements in service conditions and job security provisions that have remained unaddressed despite previous commitments.
Union representatives have called for time-bound negotiations with bank managements and relevant government authorities to reach a settlement. The collective action reflects growing frustration within the banking workforce over delayed resolutions to demands first raised several years ago, with unions warning of escalated agitation if talks do not commence promptly.
The strike disrupted banking operations across multiple branches as staff participation highlighted the depth of employee discontent. Banking sector officials have acknowledged receipt of union demands and indicated willingness for dialogue, though no specific timelines for negotiations have been announced as of now.
