Bank Negara alerts public to scams impersonating top officials

Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) has cautioned the public against scammers impersonating the central bank's leadership and officials in schemes designed to solicit investments from unsuspecting victims.

The warning underscores a growing threat of identity fraud targeting Malaysians, with fraudsters leveraging the credibility of the central bank and its officials to lend legitimacy to unauthorised investment ventures. The scams typically involve false claims that victims can access exclusive investment opportunities through connections to senior BNM personnel.

The central bank stressed that it does not promote, recommend, or endorse any private investment schemes. Both BNM and the Securities Commission Malaysia operate strict regulatory frameworks and do not market investment products directly to the public through unofficial channels.

Members of the public who receive unsolicited communications purporting to be from BNM officials or claiming to offer investment opportunities should treat such approaches with extreme caution. Authorities advised consumers to verify any claims directly with BNM through official contact channels before engaging with investment offers.
