Bank unions set Sept 11 strike over unresolved wage settlement issues

Bank unions across India have called for strike action on September 11 to press their demands on unresolved issues stemming from wage negotiations. The unions are seeking full implementation of terms agreed in principle years earlier regarding the sector's transition to a five-day working week.

The five-day week framework was first adopted in 2015 when second and fourth Saturdays were designated as holidays in banks nationwide. However, the issue resurfaced during 2020 discussions and was subsequently incorporated into the wage settlement formally signed on March 8, 2024, according to union statements.

Despite the March agreement, unions contend that key provisions remain unimplemented or require clarification. The September 11 strike represents an escalation in pressure on bank management and the Reserve Bank of India to ensure full compliance with settlement terms.

The action is expected to impact banking services across the country, with unions mobilizing workers to demonstrate their resolve on outstanding employment conditions. Bank management has yet to issue an official response to the strike notice.
