Banking without the bite: How to sidestep hidden account charges

Indian banks have long promoted savings accounts as fee-free products, yet many customers discover unexpected charges when they fail to maintain minimum balances or exceed transaction limits. These hidden costs—ranging from account maintenance fees to penalties for low balances—can quietly erode savings over time, particularly affecting middle and lower-income account holders who struggle to maintain high minimum balances.

The charges vary considerably across institutions. Some banks waive fees entirely for accounts meeting specific criteria, such as maintaining a minimum balance or setting up direct deposits of salary. Others impose maintenance charges ranging from Rs 100 to Rs 500 annually when balances dip below prescribed thresholds. Transaction fees for exceeding allowed monthly withdrawals or transfers can add another Rs 10 to Rs 50 per excess transaction, compounding quickly for active account users.

Financial experts recommend that account holders carefully review their bank's terms and conditions before opening an account, paying particular attention to balance requirements and transaction limits applicable to their account tier. Comparing offerings across multiple banks—including regional and digital banks that often have lower or no minimum balance requirements—can yield significant savings. Many institutions also offer account upgrades or relationship-based waivers for customers who maintain regular salary credits or maintain multiple products such as insurance or mutual funds.

Consumers should also monitor their statements regularly to catch unexpected charges and immediately contact their banks to dispute fees or request reversals. Most banks will reconsider charges for longstanding customers with good payment records. Digital banking has created opportunities for customers to track transactions in real time and understand their account's fee structure more transparently than ever before.
