All banks across India, including public sector and regional rural institutions, will function normally on Sunday, September 27, the finance ministry announced on Wednesday. The decision aims to mitigate service disruptions as the sector braces for a three-day nationwide strike commencing September 28, coinciding with the half-yearly banking closure.
The United Forum of Bank Unions, which claims to represent approximately 90 percent of the banking workforce, has scheduled the strike from September 28 to 30. The union is pushing for implementation of a five-day banking week alongside other workplace demands. The timing of the strike is significant, occurring immediately after the regular weekend holiday and during a critical closing period for banks.
Government authorities have prioritised ensuring uninterrupted access to essential banking services during the extended closure period. By keeping branches open on Sunday, officials aim to provide customers an additional opportunity to conduct urgent transactions before the strike commences. The proactive measure reflects efforts to cushion the public from extended service gaps while addressing workforce grievances through negotiations.
