Banking operations across India were impacted on September 11 as employee unions staged a nationwide strike to press for a five-day working week. The strike, which saw widespread participation from bank staff, resulted in significant business disruptions, with Madhya Pradesh alone reporting losses worth ₹5,500 crore.
The strike action was called by banking sector unions seeking improved working conditions for employees, primarily focusing on reducing the standard work week from the current six days to five. Union representatives stated that the issue remains unresolved despite previous discussions with bank management and employers' associations.
In response to the continuing impasse, unions have announced plans to resume strike action from September 28 if management does not accede to their demands. The unions have indicated that further industrial action is inevitable unless substantive negotiations yield positive results on the work-week issue.
The banking sector, which handles critical financial transactions for millions of Indians daily, remains vulnerable to further disruptions. Industry observers have expressed concern about the impact of repeated strikes on customer services, loan disbursements, and regular banking operations across the country.
