Barangay, SK Term Extension Bill Sent to Marcos for Signature

MANILA – Lawmakers have completed congressional action on a bill that would extend the terms of barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials to five years, with the measure now awaiting presidential approval, Senate President Sherwin Gatchalian said Thursday.
Senate Bill No. 2397 was transmitted to Malacañan following passage by both chambers of Congress. If signed into law, the legislation would effectively postpone the barangay and SK elections scheduled for November.
The bill represents a significant shift in the electoral calendar for local government units at the grassroots level. Currently, barangay officials serve three-year terms, while the proposed legislation would align their tenure with other local elected officials.
The measure now rests with President Marcos, who has the authority to sign, veto, or allow it to lapse into law without his signature. The president's decision will determine the timeline for the postponed elections and the extended service terms for incumbent barangay and SK officials nationwide.
