Barcelona police arrest 128 during overnight looting and vandalism unrest

Authorities in Barcelona conducted a major overnight operation that resulted in 128 arrests as the Catalan capital grappled with looting and vandalism across multiple locations. According to Catalan police, 73 of those arrested were juveniles, underlining the youth participation in the unrest that swept through the Mediterranean port city.

The disturbances saw significant damage inflicted on commercial premises, with police reporting that 23 businesses and other establishments were vandalised during the disorder. The incidents also took a toll on law enforcement operations, with 15 police officers injured while responding to and attempting to restore order during the overnight period.

The coordinated police response reflects regional authorities' determination to contain the unrest and restore public order. The high proportion of minors among those detained is expected to raise questions about youth involvement in civil disorder and may prompt discussions about underlying causes of the unrest in the city.
