Barisan Nasional loses Paya Rumput seat in Melaka snap polls

Barisan Nasional's grip on Melaka weakened in snap polls held this week as the ruling coalition lost the Paya Rumput seat and conceded six additional constituencies to Perikatan Nasional, though two incumbent BN candidates managed to retain their positions.

Rauf held his seat in Tanjung Bidara while Akmal successfully defended Merlimau, providing some relief to the coalition. However, BN's overall performance underscored a shifting political landscape in the southern state, with Perikatan Nasional making significant gains across several key electoral divisions.

The coalition yielded Bemban, Bukit Katil, Ayer Keroh, Bandar Hilir, Kota Laksamana and Kesidang to Perikatan Nasional, marking a notable expansion of the opposition bloc's presence in Melaka. The result reflects broader political realignment taking place in the state, where no single coalition has achieved decisive control in recent electoral cycles.

The outcome presents challenges for BN as it seeks to consolidate support ahead of national electoral opportunities, while Perikatan Nasional's success in Melaka demonstrates growing traction in a state that has historically been a BN stronghold.
