Barrier-less tolling to unlock ₹10,000 crore in highway revenue, says Gadkari
India's highways ministry expects barrier-less toll collection to significantly boost revenue while modernizing payment infrastructure across the national road network. The government aims to deploy the technology at majority of toll plazas by end of year.

Barrier-less tolling systems are expected to add ₹10,000 crore annually to highway toll collections, according to statements from the roads ministry. The technology eliminates physical toll booths, allowing vehicles to pass through toll plazas without stopping, thereby reducing congestion and improving traffic flow on major highways.
The government has set an ambitious timeline for implementation of Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) systems, targeting deployment at 60-70 percent of toll plazas by December this year. This represents a significant acceleration in modernizing India's toll collection infrastructure, which has traditionally relied on barrier-based systems.
A nationwide rollout of barrier-less tolling across all toll plazas is targeted for completion by March 2027. The transition is expected to streamline collections while providing motorists with seamless passage, reducing delays that typically occur at conventional toll booths during peak traffic hours.
The initiative forms part of the broader modernization of India's highway network, which has expanded substantially in recent years. Officials believe the technology will not only increase revenue efficiency but also enhance user experience and reduce environmental impact from idling vehicles at toll plazas.
