Basketball courts score environmental win as fishing nets find new purpose
A partnership between the Charles Antetokounmpo Family Foundation and environmental organisation Enaleia has transformed discarded fishing nets into basketball equipment across Athens. The initiative addresses marine pollution while upgrading public sports facilities.

The collaborative project has refurbished 80 basketball courts throughout Athens by repurposing waste fishing gear into new nets, combining athletic infrastructure development with environmental conservation efforts. Rather than allowing discarded fishing equipment to contribute to ocean pollution, the initiative diverts the material for productive community use.
Enaleia, which focuses on combating marine waste, partnered with the foundation to identify suitable nets from fishing operations and coordinate their transformation into sports equipment. The effort represents a practical application of circular economy principles, where waste materials are given extended life through alternative use.
Young athletes now access improved court facilities while simultaneously engaging with a tangible example of environmental stewardship. The project demonstrates how sports infrastructure development can align with sustainability objectives, encouraging awareness of marine conservation among participants.
The initiative reflects broader efforts across the region to address environmental challenges through community-focused solutions. By linking recreational facilities with waste reduction, the partnership provides a model for other cities seeking to upgrade public sports infrastructure while tackling pollution concerns.
