ORION, Bataan – The Bataan chapter of the League of Municipalities of the Philippines has reiterated its opposition to national government efforts to revive the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant, which has remained dormant for four decades.
Town Mayor Antonio Raymundo Jr., who heads the LMP Bataan Chapter, expressed the group's concerns during an interview Thursday. The mayors' position reflects longstanding apprehension among local officials about reactivating the facility located in Morong town.
The Bataan Nuclear Power Plant, constructed in the 1980s but never commercially operated, has been a subject of periodic revival proposals over the years. Concerns about safety, environmental impact, and financial viability have consistently shaped local government resistance to the project.
The municipal leaders' opposition underscores the importance of local stakeholder engagement in major infrastructure decisions affecting provincial communities. The stance suggests continued friction between regional and national authorities on the nuclear facility's future.
