Batac launches Ilocos Norte's first automated weather monitoring station

BATAC, Ilocos Norte — The city government formally opened Ilocos Norte's first Automated Weather Station on Wednesday in Sitio Capaoayan, Barangay Tabug, marking a significant advancement in agricultural support infrastructure for the province.

The facility has been established to supply farmers with accurate, location-specific weather information on a timely basis. Officials said the station will enable agricultural producers to make evidence-based decisions regarding planting schedules, water management for irrigation systems, and the optimal timing for applying fertilizers and pest control measures.

The AWS installation addresses longstanding challenges faced by the farming community, which has historically relied on generalized weather forecasts that may not reflect localized conditions affecting their fields. By providing hyperlocal data, the station is intended to improve crop yields and reduce losses attributable to weather-related factors.

The project represents part of broader efforts by municipal authorities to modernize agricultural services and enhance productivity in Ilocos Norte, one of the nation's significant agricultural regions. Officials have indicated that the weather data collected will be made accessible to farming cooperatives and individual agricultural producers throughout the province.
