Batu pond upgrade could add water supply to flood control role
Kuala Lumpur authorities are exploring plans to transform the Batu flood retention pond into a dual-purpose facility, potentially supplying 10 million litres of water daily while maintaining its primary flood mitigation function.

The Batu flood retention pond in Kuala Lumpur could soon serve a dual purpose beyond its current role in managing seasonal flooding, according to city planners reviewing an upgrade proposal. Petra, the water company under study for the expansion, has put forward plans to harness the facility's capacity to supply water to the capital and surrounding areas on a daily basis.
Flood mitigation remains the primary function of the retention pond, which plays a critical role in the city's stormwater management infrastructure during the monsoon season. However, officials are confident that the facility can be upgraded to accommodate additional water supply operations without compromising its core flood-control responsibilities.
The proposed 10 million-litre daily supply would represent a significant contribution to the region's water resources, particularly as demand continues to grow across the Klang Valley. The dual-function approach reflects efforts by water authorities to maximise the utility of existing infrastructure and reduce the need for new facilities.
Details regarding the timeline, cost, and regulatory requirements for the upgrade are still being assessed. Water authorities have indicated that environmental assessments and stakeholder consultations will be essential before any development moves forward.
