Bavuma's maiden Test century puts South Africa in command against Australia

Bavuma's unbeaten 179 proved instrumental in South Africa's recovery after the side had slumped to 110-6, demonstrating remarkable resilience and concentration across 334 deliveries. The skipper struck 18 fours and one six while orchestrating a crucial turnaround that shifted momentum decisively in the Proteas' favour.

After losing early wickets on the opening day when South Africa reached 12-2, Bavuma then endured a frustrating second day as rain and wet outfield conditions hampered progress, leaving his side at 92-5. However, the captain refused to yield, anchoring his team's innings with a patient, determined approach that proved decisive.

Bavuma's efforts were supported by valuable contributions from the lower order, with Marco Jansen scoring 85 and Simon Harmer adding 82. The partnerships proved crucial, particularly the 106-run stand between Bavuma and Jansen for the seventh wicket before lunch. Wiaan Mulder's early dismissal for 13, caught at slip off Mitchell Starc's bowling, had threatened further collapse before the recovery began. Starc's success marked his 450th Test wicket.

In reply, Australia struggled early, reaching just 3-1 at stumps as the Proteas' bowlers seized the initiative. South Africa's strong first-innings position now places them firmly in the ascendancy heading into the match's crucial phase.
