A weather system gathering strength over the Bay of Bengal is on track to become a major cyclonic threat to coastal Andhra Pradesh, the India Meteorological Department said on Tuesday. The depression is forecast to escalate into a very severe cyclonic storm as it tracks westward toward the subcontinent.
The cyclone is expected to make landfall along the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts Wednesday morning, bringing destructive winds of 115 to 125 kilometres per hour, with gusts potentially reaching 140 kmph. Authorities have begun preparatory measures in vulnerable coastal districts as residents brace for the system's arrival.
Meteorological officials have cautioned that the impending cyclone could produce impacts more severe than Cyclone Montha, which struck the region last year. The storm is anticipated to bring heavy rainfall and significant disruption to normal life across affected areas.
Coastal communities have been advised to secure loose structures, stock essential supplies, and follow evacuation orders if issued by local authorities. The state administration is on high alert to coordinate relief and rescue operations once the system crosses the coast.
