Bayern Munich made short work of lower-league opposition in the German Cup second round, dispatching Magdeburg 6-1 to secure their passage to the quarter-finals. The commanding performance at the Allianz Arena saw the Bavarian giants field a strong lineup despite resting star striker Harry Kane, who was crowned the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner this week.
Kane's absence did little to hamper Bayern's attacking prowess as the hosts' depth in forward options proved too much for the second-tier side. The six-goal haul underscored Bayern's quality and demonstrated their capacity to win convincingly without fielding their full complement of star players.
The victory marked another emphatic statement from Bayern as they continue their pursuit of multiple domestic and European honours this season. Manager Vincent Kompany's decision to rest Kane also provided valuable game time for squad players while keeping the 31-year-old striker fresh ahead of upcoming league fixtures.
Magdeburg, competing in Germany's second division, offered limited resistance to the six-time German Cup holders. Bayern will await the results of other second-round matches to learn their quarter-final opponent.
