The Board of Control for Cricket in India is moving to establish a dedicated focus on safeguarding young cricketers from the twin threats of drug abuse and match-fixing, according to officials familiar with the board's plans.
The newly-constituted Junior Cricket Committee, to be announced at the BCCI's AGM scheduled for next month, will carry expanded responsibilities beyond traditional talent development. Among its key mandates will be launching educational initiatives to alert emerging players to the perils of substance abuse, illegal betting, and involvement in fixing-related activities.
The move reflects growing concern within Indian cricket's governing body about protecting the sport's integrity and the welfare of its younger participants. Officials believe that early intervention and awareness programmes at the junior level can serve as critical safeguards against infiltration by criminal elements seeking to compromise matches.
The committee's educational role is expected to complement existing anti-corruption measures overseen by the BCCI's separate compliance and anti-corruption units. By embedding awareness training into the junior cricket pathway, the board aims to create a culture of vigilance among the next generation of Indian cricketers.
