Beijing accuses Taiwan of disrespecting war dead over WWII history

Chinese officials have launched a sharp rebuke against Taiwan, alleging that Taipei's approach to documenting World War II events constitutes a betrayal of historical facts and an affront to those who died during the conflict. The disagreement centres on competing versions of wartime events and the legacy of the anti-Japanese resistance.

Beijing views challenges to its official historical account as particularly sensitive, given the communist government's emphasis on the resistance narrative as a cornerstone of national identity and legitimacy. Officials characterised Taiwan's position as a disrespect to fallen soldiers and an attempt to distort the historical record.

The row underscores the broader historical disputes between mainland China and Taiwan, where competing narratives about the war period and subsequent events remain a flashpoint in cross-strait relations. Taipei has maintained its own interpretations of wartime history, reflecting its distinct political trajectory since 1949.
