Belagavi activist who challenged Prada over Kolhapuri design dies

G.N. Gopikrishna, a prominent Belagavi resident known for championing indigenous craftsmanship rights, died recently, marking the loss of a figure who became an unexpected advocate for protecting traditional Indian footwear design.

Gopikrishna came to public attention when he discovered that Prada had incorporated the distinctive aesthetics of Kolhapuri chappals—handcrafted traditional sandals from Maharashtra—into its commercial product line without seeking permission from or crediting the artisans who developed the design over generations.

Rather than allowing the matter to pass unnoticed, Gopikrishna leveraged his business connections and local influence to facilitate dialogue among multiple stakeholders. He orchestrated meetings that brought together officials from the Karnataka government, representatives from Prada, and the traditional artisans whose work had inspired the luxury brand's designs.

The intervention highlighted broader concerns about intellectual property protections for traditional crafts and designs across South Asia, particularly when international fashion houses draw inspiration from indigenous creations without formal acknowledgment or compensation to originating communities.
