Bengaluru buses to get advanced safety systems to cut accidents

The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) is deploying Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) across 50 buses in a bid to strengthen road safety and reduce accident rates, according to transport officials. The initiative represents a significant step toward modernising the state-run bus operator's safety infrastructure in India's technology hub.

The ADAS technology will continuously monitor driver alertness and behaviour patterns while in operation. By detecting signs of driver fatigue, distraction, or unsafe driving practices, the system can issue real-time alerts to operators, enabling corrective action before incidents occur.

Beyond driver monitoring, the safety systems are designed to identify and warn against multiple road hazards. The technology provides instant notifications for obstacles, potential collisions, and other dangerous situations that may threaten passenger or commuter safety on Bengaluru's busy roads.

Transport officials emphasise that the rollout reflects growing recognition of technology's role in preventing accidents on public transit networks. By combining human oversight with automated safety features, the initiative aims to establish safer travel conditions across BMTC's extensive bus network serving millions of daily commuters.

The deployment across 50 buses marks an initial phase, with potential for wider expansion depending on performance outcomes and operational effectiveness metrics gathered during the implementation period.
