Bengaluru Police rescue 529 child labourers in sweeping city operation

Bengaluru City Police concluded a special enforcement operation on Saturday that targeted child labour across the city, rescuing 529 children from exploitative work conditions. The coordinated action involved surprise inspections at 6,076 locations, including commercial establishments, industrial areas, and other commercial zones spread across multiple police jurisdictions.

Special teams comprising police personnel and Labour Department inspectors conducted the raids, resulting in 105 cases registered against shop owners and employers. The cases were filed under the Child and Adolescent Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act and the Juvenile Justice Act, with investigations continuing into the circumstances surrounding each incident.

The West division led the rescue operation with 103 children recovered, followed by the East division with 74 children and the North division with 66 children. The operation underscores ongoing efforts by city authorities to combat child labour, which remains a persistent challenge across urban India despite legal prohibitions.

The rescued children have been referred to appropriate welfare authorities for rehabilitation and support services. Authorities indicated that further action would be taken based on investigation findings, with focus on ensuring employers comply with child protection legislation.
