Bengaluru prison launches bakery initiative to aid inmate rehabilitation

Prison authorities in Bengaluru have launched two bakery initiatives aimed at skill development and economic sustainability. The programmes—Nava Sankalpa Bakery and Bakery on Wheels—represent an effort to provide meaningful employment opportunities for incarcerated individuals while creating an additional revenue stream for the government.

The stationary bakery unit, housed within the prison premises, will produce baked goods for sale to the public and institutional buyers. The mobile bakery unit will operate as a mobile retail outlet, expanding market reach and generating additional income. Both ventures provide hands-on training in baking techniques, food safety, and business operations.

Prison officials view the initiative as part of a broader rehabilitation strategy. By equipping inmates with marketable vocational skills during their incarceration, the programmes aim to facilitate smoother reintegration into civilian life upon release. Participants gain practical experience while contributing to their own upkeep and the prison's operational costs.

The dual approach addresses a longstanding challenge in the Indian penal system: preparing inmates for self-sufficiency post-release. Officials anticipate the bakery products will find ready markets among local retailers, hospitality establishments, and direct consumers, creating sustainable employment prospects for programme graduates.
