Bengaluru's 'Repair Maadi' workshops promote sustainable consumption habits

The Indian Institute of World Culture on B.P. Wadia Road in Basavanagudi is running 'Repair Maadi' workshops as part of a broader push toward sustainable consumption. The initiative invites residents to bring broken household items and learn repair techniques from experienced practitioners.

The workshops operate on a walk-in basis, welcoming participants between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. This flexible scheduling allows working professionals and homemakers alike to participate without prior registration or commitment.

'Repair Maadi'—which translates to 'repair shop' in Kannada—reflects a growing movement in urban India to challenge throwaway culture. By teaching residents practical repair skills, the workshops aim to extend the lifespan of consumer goods, reduce landfill waste, and foster a more conscious approach to resource consumption.

The initiative comes at a time when Indian cities are grappling with mounting waste management challenges. Experts have increasingly advocated for behavioral shifts toward sustainability, with repair and reuse emerging as accessible alternatives to constant replacement.
