Bengaluru's Victory Cinema Won't Screen Ramayana, Cites Revenue Model

The iconic single-screen theatre in Karnataka's capital has declined to exhibit the anticipated film, citing its established policy of accepting movies only on a percentage-share revenue basis rather than fixed-fee arrangements.

Victory Cinema in Bengaluru will not be screening the upcoming Ramayana film, the theatre management announced through a public statement outlining the reasons behind the decision. In a note titled "Why Ramayana Will Not Play at Victory," the establishment clarified that the choice stemmed from its longstanding operational policy rather than any other consideration.

The single-screen theatre operates on a percentage-share model, whereby it retains a portion of ticket sales revenue rather than accepting films under fixed-fee or advance-payment arrangements. According to the theatre's explanation, the distributors of the Ramayana project did not align with this revenue-sharing framework, prompting the management to decline the film's exhibition.

Victory Cinema has maintained this financial model throughout its operational history, applying it uniformly to all releases regardless of scale or anticipated box-office performance. The theatre's decision underscores the ongoing negotiations between exhibitors and distributors over financial terms, a recurring challenge in India's cinema exhibition sector.

The theatre's statement reflects broader industry dynamics where single-screen cinemas, facing increased competition from multiplexes, seek to protect their revenue streams through established policies. Victory Cinema's position highlights the complex economics of film distribution and exhibition in India's regional markets.
