Benguet towns halt classes Friday as monsoon threatens heavy rains

BAGUIO CITY — Four towns in Benguet province cancelled in-person instruction on Friday as authorities issued orange-level rainfall warnings across the region. The suspension came as the prevailing southwest monsoon intensified, bringing the prospect of heavy precipitation to the highland areas.

The municipality of Kibungan halted all face-to-face classes spanning from daycare through senior high school levels, as well as sessions under its Alternative Learning System program. The decision reflected heightened concerns over the incoming weather system and its potential impact on student and staff safety.

Provincial officials implemented the precautionary measures to minimize risks associated with severe weather conditions, including potential flooding and landslides common to the mountainous terrain. The suspension underscored ongoing efforts by local government units to prioritize public welfare during adverse weather episodes.

The southwest monsoon, locally known as the Habagat, typically brings heavy rainfall to western portions of Luzon during the summer months. Residents in affected areas have been advised to remain alert for updates from weather agencies and local authorities.
