Bersama candidates pledge justice for Teoh Beng Hock, new anti-torture law

Candidates representing the Bersama coalition in the Malacca state elections have endorsed a formal pledge addressing long-standing demands for justice in the 2009 death of political aide Teoh Beng Hock. The commitment signals renewed political attention to a case that has remained controversial over more than a decade.

The pledge encompasses several key commitments, notably calling for an international team of experts to conduct a fresh investigation into the circumstances surrounding Teoh's death. It also expresses support for the enactment of a comprehensive Anti-Torture Act, reflecting broader concerns about custodial safeguards and human rights protections.

Teoh Beng Hock, a 30-year-old aide to Selangor assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Seai, died after falling from the 14th floor of the Anti-Corruption Agency building in Kuala Lumpur in July 2009. His death prompted widespread public concern and multiple inquiries, though questions about the circumstances have persisted among civil society groups and opposition politicians.

The signing of the pledge by Bersama candidates reflects ongoing pressure from advocacy groups and political figures who believe a more thorough international review could provide clarity on the case. The inclusion of anti-torture legislation signals broader commitments to institutional accountability and the protection of individuals in state custody.
