SAN ILDEFONSO, Ilocos Sur — The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 1 has distributed 3,500 relief packs to fisherfolk and their families impacted by recent storms and the southwest monsoon across the Ilocos region and neighbouring areas.
The assistance programme targeted fishing communities in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union and Pangasinan, provinces that have borne the brunt of severe weather disruptions and the seasonal habagat monsoon conditions. The relief packs represent a comprehensive response from the agency to support vulnerable coastal populations dependent on fishing livelihoods.
The distribution effort underscores growing efforts to provide immediate humanitarian relief to maritime communities facing economic hardship from weather-related disruptions. BFAR Region 1 has positioned itself as a key support mechanism for fisherfolk navigating the challenges posed by seasonal weather patterns and climate-related hazards.
The initiative comes as fishing communities across northern Luzon continue to grapple with the impacts of adverse weather on their operations and incomes. Officials have emphasised the importance of sustained support mechanisms for affected fishing households as they work to rebuild their livelihoods.
