CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro — The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) and other regulatory agencies have begun daily monitoring of water quality in the coastal waters off Odiongan following reports of fish kills on October 4 and 6.
The coordinated monitoring program is designed to establish baseline environmental conditions in the affected area while investigating the underlying causes of the fish mortality incidents. BFAR officials stated that the comprehensive water quality assessment will help identify potential environmental factors contributing to the mass fish deaths.
The daily surveillance represents part of BFAR's response protocol to unusual fisheries incidents and follows standard procedures for documenting coastal environmental conditions when fish kill events occur. Regulators have not yet disclosed preliminary findings from their initial assessments of the incidents.
The monitoring program will continue until BFAR and partner agencies determine the source of the fish kills and confirm that water quality conditions in the area have stabilized. Officials urged fishing communities in the region to report any additional unusual activity or continued fish mortality to local BFAR offices.
