SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union — The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) brought together fisherfolk, government officials, youth organizations, and civil society groups on Thursday to launch the 2026 FishCoRe Salimbayan, a coordinated effort to advance sustainable fisheries practices across the Ilocos region.
The FishCoRe initiative, formally known as the Philippine Fisheries and Coastal Resiliency Project, represents a multi-stakeholder approach to addressing environmental pressures on local fishing communities. By convening representatives from various sectors, BFAR seeks to foster dialogue and coordinate action on resource management challenges that threaten both livelihoods and marine ecosystems.
The program's focus on resilience reflects growing concerns about the sustainability of Philippine fisheries amid climate change, overfishing, and habitat degradation. Through the Salimbayan component, project organizers aim to build adaptive capacity within fishing communities while promoting practices that balance economic needs with environmental protection.
The launch signals renewed commitment to integrating traditional fisher knowledge with contemporary conservation science. Officials emphasized that successful implementation will depend on sustained cooperation between government agencies, coastal communities, and supporting organizations working toward shared fisheries management objectives.
