Bhim Army chief Chandra Shekhar Azad has appealed to Home Minister Amit Shah to initiate a Central Bureau of Investigation probe into the death of a Dalit student at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. The student, reportedly from a marginalized community, died on September 18 in circumstances that authorities have attributed to suicide.
In his formal letter to the Home Minister, Azad sought intervention from the central investigating agency, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding the death. The appeal reflects growing concern within Dalit rights organizations regarding the welfare and safety of students from disadvantaged backgrounds at premier educational institutions across the country.
IIT-Bombay, located in Powai, has faced increased scrutiny in recent years following several deaths of students from marginalized communities on its campus. The incidents have prompted discussions about mental health support, social integration, and institutional accountability at India's top technical colleges.
The Bhim Army, a social organization focused on rights and welfare of Dalit communities, has increasingly taken up cases it perceives as involving institutional negligence or discriminatory practices. The organization's intervention in this matter underscores ongoing tensions surrounding campus safety and equity at elite Indian universities.
