KATHMANDU — A glacial lake outburst in Bhutan has inflicted significant damage to facilities at the Gasa Tshachu natural hot springs resort in the mountainous kingdom, according to media reports emerging Friday. The flood was triggered when Shintaphu glacial lake burst its banks, sending a torrent of water through the Himalayan landscape. Authorities have confirmed that while infrastructure at the resort sustained considerable damage, no fatalities or injuries were recorded in the incident. The Gasa Tshachu hot springs, located in northwestern Bhutan, is a popular tourist destination known for its natural geothermal features and mountainous setting. Glacial lake outburst floods, or GLOFs, are an increasing concern across the Hindu Kush-Himalayan region due to climate change and glacier retreat, posing risks to communities and infrastructure downstream of such water bodies.
